A House report on the Brumadinho dam disaster criticizes the lack of criminal accountability for the security flaws that led to the collapse of the dam. Congressman Pedro Aihara authored the report and highlighted Vale’s lack of transparency in compensation agreements with victims.
The report was presented to a committee on dam failures in early July, but two scheduled meetings to vote on it were canceled. Mr. Aihara, a former firefighter spokesman in Minas Gerais, described the tragedy as “unforgivable” and emphasized the need for justice and accountability.
Vale and authorities signed a compensation agreement in 2021, and Vale had paid BRL 11.6 billion as of June 2024. However, transparency issues remain with funds intended for victims’ families. State prosecutors charged 16 people in connection to the disaster, including Vale’s former CEO.
Despite legal challenges, the quest for justice and accountability in the Brumadinho case continues, emphasizing the importance of transparency and corporate responsibility in ensuring the safety and well-being of affected communities.
