Cyprus is set to build a new naval base along its southern coast to aid in the flow of humanitarian assistance to the Middle East, as part of a larger EU initiative. The base, located near Limassol, will accommodate larger vessels for transporting aid, enhancing Cyprus’ role as the nearest EU state to the region. The Defense Minister emphasized the significance of the project in supporting the bloc’s foreign policy objectives.
With Greece providing advisory and technical support, the base is expected to bolster aid efforts following the recent conflict in Gaza. A government-commissioned study will outline the construction details soon. The port of Larnaca has been crucial for aid deliveries to Gaza, highlighting the strategic importance of Cyprus in regional relief operations.
