Covering 187 countries from 2010 to 2021, the FAO’s food balance sheets measure national supply based on the amount produced plus the quantity imported, giving snapshots of what is potentially available for consumption.

India, with a population similar to China’s, had a daily protein supply of only 70.52 grams (2.48oz) per capita in 2021, based on the FAO food balance sheets.

In comparison, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Nigeria had varying levels of protein supply per capita, with China facing challenges in surpassing the US in agriculture despite advancements in other areas.

However, China has made significant progress in improving its food security through innovative methods such as aquaculture and agricultural technologies, reducing reliance on imports.

China now leads in aquaculture globally, adopting new technologies to enhance crop yields for animal feed production, highlighting a shift towards sustainable practices for future food security.
