In Bangladesh, student protesters are demanding an end to quotas for government jobs, leading to a nationwide shutdown following deadly clashes. Fueled by high youth unemployment, the students are pushing to abolish a 30 percent quota for veterans’ families from the 1971 independence war.
Protest coordinator Nahid Islam declared a complete shutdown, except for essential services. Despite this, many offices remained open in Dhaka, with tightened security in place. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina promised to investigate the deaths caused by police in protests and appealed for patience until a court ruling on the quota.
The clashes, resulting in six deaths including students, have drawn international concern and calls for protecting peaceful protesters. The tension between government supporters and demonstrators is the biggest challenge to Hasina’s fourth term, which began amid opposition boycotts.
