In a recent announcement, the US State Department revealed that it has imposed visa restrictions on former IDF sergeant Elor Azaria and his immediate family members. This decision is a result of Azaria’s involvement in what the State Department deems as a “gross violation of human rights,” specifically an “extrajudicial killing in the West Bank.”
The State Department plans to impose similar restrictions on individuals who have allegedly committed acts of violence against civilians or property in the West Bank. They are calling on both Israel and the Palestinian Authority to hold these individuals accountable for their actions.
Elor Azaria gained notoriety for his conviction of manslaughter in the shooting of a Palestinian attacker during his IDF service in 2016. Despite serving time in prison, Azaria has since been released and reportedly opened a bakery in Ramla.
Gantz speaks out
Israeli MK Benny Gantz has criticized the US State Department’s actions, stating that Israel has a robust legal system capable of dealing with such cases internally. He emphasizes that there is no justification for external interference in Israel’s legal processes.
