Ukraine has listed 42,000 citizens in its unified register for persons missing under special circumstances, according to a report by Ukrinform. This register collects data on individuals who have disappeared due to war, occupation, or natural disasters.
This figure highlights the humanitarian impact of Russia’s full-scale war, including deportations, kidnappings, and a significant number of casualties among both military personnel and civilians in Ukraine.
The head of the Interior Ministry’s missing persons department, Dmytro Bohatiuk, stated that the register has collected information on 51,000 missing persons since its launch in May 2023, with 42,000 currently listed in the register. This represents a substantial increase from previous figures.
The ministry also has data on 7,000 individuals whose whereabouts have been determined, including former prisoners of war and deceased individuals, primarily soldiers.
In addition, Ukraine reports sporadically on the number of people in Russian captivity, with ongoing efforts for prisoner exchanges. The situation is further complicated by the forced deportation of Ukrainian children to various locations.
