Germany is contemplating the idea of bringing back military conscription, but a recent study by the ifo Institute warns of significant economic consequences. The study, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Finance, estimates that reintroducing conscription could cost the country up to EUR 70 billion. This cost would stem from a decrease in Germany’s gross national income, which could plummet by 1.6% under the most comprehensive scenario, affecting the entire age cohort.
