Israel has been accused of weaponizing the Gaza water supply, causing a severe shortage and endangering the lives of Palestinians, according to a new report by Oxfam. The water supply has been drastically cut, leaving residents with just under a third of the recommended minimum for emergencies. This has led to a quarter of Gaza’s population falling ill from preventable diseases due to lack of clean water and sanitation.
Oxfam’s report revealed that Israel deliberately caused the water shortage by destroying water facilities and obstructing aid to Gaza. The data showed extensive damage to water infrastructure, with key facilities being destroyed at an alarming rate. Water production has plummeted, exacerbating the crisis.
Oxfam’s Water and Sanitation Specialist, Lama Abdul Samad, condemned Israel’s actions, stating that the government has been depriving Palestinians of safe and sufficient water for years. The international community has criticized Israel for its use of collective punishment and weaponizing water.
Despite pressure from western allies, Israel has promised to provide electricity to a water desalination facility in Gaza. However, the situation remains dire as Gaza residents struggle to access clean water amidst the ongoing conflict.
