Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald is urging the Taoiseach to push for a public inquiry into the murder of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane during his meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Mr. Finucane, who was killed in 1989 by the Ulster Defence Association with collusion from the British state, has had his widow and children campaigning for justice for decades.

The British government’s decision not to hold a public inquiry in 2020 follows a ruling that previous investigations into the murder had failed to meet the required standards. Sinn Féin and the Irish Government have been supporting the Finucane family in their quest for truth and justice.

With the Court of Appeal setting a timetable for action and the Labour Party urging for an inquiry, the pressure is mounting on the UK government to act. Mary Lou McDonald is determined to see justice served, and with upcoming discussions between government officials, the hope for progress in Anglo-Irish relations is on the horizon.
