French anti-terror police have arrested a suspected neo-Nazi sympathizer who allegedly planned to target the Olympic torch relay, according to Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin.
The man, detained in the Alsace region of France, leads a group called “French Aryan Division” on Telegram and is being questioned for death threats and hate speech made online.
The suspect’s remarks sparked an investigation by the Paris prosecutor’s office, although they did not specifically reference the Olympics. Darmanin stated a clear intent to disrupt the torch relay.
The suspect, known for holding “ultra-right ideas,” had a history of targeting political figures and immigrants, Darmanin revealed.
The suspect is also under investigation for sharing personal information and bomb-making instructions online, in addition to the alleged death threats and hate speech.
With the Paris Olympics underway, a massive security operation involving 45,000 police and gendarmes plus a 10,000-strong military force is being carried out to ensure safety.
