FG panel uncovers causes of Plateau school collapse

Investigative Panel Releases Preliminary Report on Collapsed School Building in Jos

The Federal Government’s investigative panel on the collapsed two-storey school building in Jos, Plateau State, has released a preliminary report revealing distress and weak materials used in the construction. The building housed Saint Academy in the Busa Buji community, where 22 people died and 154 were rescued.

Prof Samson Duna, Director General of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute, shared that the building showed signs of distress, with doubts about the quality of materials and inadequate reinforcement anchorage. The report emphasized the need for integrity tests on distressed buildings and called for collaboration among stakeholders to prevent future disasters.

Senate President Godswill Akpabi advised reinforcing town planning laws to prevent such incidents in the future while condoling with the Plateau State government. The tragic event underscores the importance of strict enforcement and compliance with building regulations to avoid further tragedies.

Overall, the report highlights the need for stricter regulations and thorough inspections in the construction industry to prevent building collapses and ensure public safety.
