SPLM-IO Withdraws from Kenyan-Mediated Peace Talks in Nairobi

The Political Bureau of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) made a bold decision to withdraw from the ongoing Kenyan-mediated peace talks between the government and holdout opposition groups in Nairobi. Despite the initialing of eight protocols at the talks dubbed the Tumaini (Hope) Initiative, the SPLM-IO rejected them, citing a deviation from the intended purpose.

The SPLM-IO criticized the Tumaini Initiative for overstepping its boundaries and taking on roles that undermine the sovereignty of South Sudan. The proposed protocols were deemed to breach the existing peace agreements and laws of the country. The opposition outfit also raised concerns about the usurpation of powers by the proposed National Leadership Council, which would bypass established government structures.

Ultimately, the SPLM-IO reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive peace and the implementation of the existing peace agreement as the pathway to lasting stability in South Sudan.
