Minister for Integration Roderic O’Gorman has announced plans to use the site in Coolock to house International Protection applicants in response to the increasing number of applicants coming to Ireland. The department will collaborate with the gardaí and the accommodation provider to house up to 500 applicants.
Mr O’Gorman stated that there was no lack of engagement with local representatives, emphasizing that the department engaged early and significantly. He also commended the strong response from the gardaí to the recent protests in Coolock.
He addressed concerns about violence at the site, stating that the approach is directed by An Garda Síochána’s operational decisions. The minister highlighted ongoing assessments of 30 buildings to purchase for housing International Protection applicants, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in the process.
Mr O’Gorman shared that the policy aims to provide core State-owned International Protection accommodation, with options for reception and integration centers as well as new construction on State-owned land. He assured swift intervention and accommodation for unaccommodated asylum seekers and those rough sleeping.
