Vaughan Gething, the first Black leader of a European country, has announced his resignation as the first minister of Wales amidst political turmoil in the Senedd. This follows the resignation of four Welsh ministers in a strategic move to pressure Gething to step down after he refused to resign following a vote of no confidence in June.
The Senedd vote was triggered by the Conservatives over donations to Gething’s leadership campaign from a company with a tainted past. Additionally, Gething faced criticism for removing Hannah Blythyn as the minister for social partnership, amid allegations of leaking text messages.
In his resignation statement, Gething expressed disappointment at the accusations against him and defended his integrity. He announced plans for the election of a new leader of the Labour party.
