The Irish Thalidomide Association has rejected a letter from the Government, stating that it did not amount to a proper apology for the harm caused to its members. The association emphasized that any expression of sympathy does not equate to an apology and described the healthcare supports announced by the Government as inadequate and lacking a fair compensation scheme.
Spokesperson Finola Cassidy mentioned that the ITA would meet with the Taoiseach to discuss these issues, highlighting the need for justice for thalidomide survivors. Dr. Austin O’Carroll, another spokesperson, criticized the Government for going in the “wrong direction” with the letter, causing significant anger among survivors.
Despite the controversy, the Taoiseach has expressed his respect for the survivors and looks forward to meeting with them. While the purpose of the letter was to highlight current health and social care supports, he acknowledged that more needs to be done to address the outstanding issues faced by thalidomide survivors.
