TG4, the Irish language television channel, has requested €13.6 million from the Government to establish its own independent news service separate from RTÉ. This move comes after a recommendation by the Commission on the Future of Media for TG4 to have full editorial control over its news channel. The proposed budget includes €2 million for equipment upgrades and €11.5 million for the first three years of operation.
Since its inception in 1996, TG4 has relied on RTÉ for its news service and staff. However, the channel has been pushing for autonomy since 2020. RTÉ has expressed commitment to Irish language news services, but discussions are ongoing regarding the future of Nuacht TG4.
Despite concerns from the National Union of Journalists regarding employment rights, TG4 Director General Alan Esslemont is determined to improve working conditions for Nuacht TG4 journalists in Co Galway. RTÉ has expressed disappointment in the situation, emphasizing their continued support for TG4’s programming.
