The Pyongyang municipal government has issued an order to use methane gas for energy in the outskirts of the city. The initiative aims to address energy shortages and improve living conditions in agricultural areas surrounding Pyongyang. Local authorities are installing refining equipment to convert biogas into methane gas, starting with sewage treatment plants in rural counties.

Residents will pay installation fees to cover costs, with plans to gradually expand the project to all outlying agricultural counties. While some residents are skeptical about the sustainability of the project, the city government aims to encourage public participation by reducing cost burdens on households. Daily NK’s anonymous sources report on the progress of this initiative in North Korea.
