Exciting news for the people of Kogi State as the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission has announced the date for the local government elections – 19 October. This decision comes after the Supreme Court ruling last week that declared the caretaker committee governing local government areas as illegal.
In response to this, the Federal government stated that the allocation to these areas would be withheld as the caretaker committee system is no longer recognized. The Chairman, Mamman Eri, emphasized that the election schedule aligns with the Constitution and the powers vested in the State Independent Electoral Commission.
A comprehensive timetable has been set up to ensure transparency and fairness. Candidates are required to deposit specific amounts, with certain disqualifications in place, such as past criminal convictions involving drugs. Eri expressed gratitude for the support to ensure a successful election.
