Finnish President Alexander Stubb has signed a controversial law permitting border guards to reject asylum seekers crossing from Russia.
Amid a surge in Russian asylum seekers, Finland shut its eastern border in December, accusing Moscow of a “hybrid attack” by facilitating migrants from Africa and the Middle East.
The emergency “deportation law” requires assessment by the government and president before implementation, possibly leading to the reopening of the Russian-Finnish border.
Many legal experts and protesters argue the law violates human rights and international obligations, with Finnish President Stubb acknowledging the debate’s importance in safeguarding national security and the rule of law.
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo emphasized the law’s message to Russia and allies, restricting asylum access to specific vulnerable groups during its enforcement.
