FG insists no plan to sell varsities to private investors

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, reassured the public that the Federal Government has no intention of selling universities to private investors. Addressing concerns raised by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Mamman emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining public institutions while also embracing transnational education for global competitiveness.

He explained that the government’s policy allows for transnational education, inviting international institutions to collaborate with local universities for mutual benefits. Mamman clarified that this strategy does not involve selling off universities but rather aims to enhance the country’s educational landscape through partnerships with global entities.

Emphasizing the need to learn from successful models in other countries, Mamman highlighted the advantages of transnational education, such as raising academic standards, fostering exchange programs, and attracting foreign investments.

The minister’s engagement with agency heads and parastatals aimed to review progress, address challenges, and reaffirm the government’s dedication to improving the education sector in Nigeria.
