India’s unorganised sector lost at least 1.6 million jobs between 2015 and 2023, raising concerns about unemployment. With policy decisions like demonetisation and Covid lockdown, the impact is evident. Despite promises by Narendra Modi’s government to create jobs, the reality tells a different story. A recent survey reveals a decline in employment figures in the unincorporated non-agricultural sector.

While Mr Modi claims to have created millions of jobs in recent years, the quality and sustainability of these jobs are questionable. Economic reports indicate a significant increase in temporary and unpaid work, especially in agriculture. Critics argue that these numbers do not reflect the true state of employment in the country.

The Reserve Bank’s report highlights a surge in employment rates, but experts remain skeptical about the quality of these jobs. As India grapples with rising unemployment, the need for sustainable and meaningful employment opportunities is more pressing than ever. The government’s claims of job creation must align with the ground reality to address the growing concerns of the workforce.
