US Focuses on Keeping Old Minuteman ICBMs Working as Sentinel Delays Soar
Sputnik International
Washington (Sputnik) – The US Air Force is prioritizing the maintenance of its aging Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) until the 2030s while facing delays and rising costs with the replacement Sentinel ICBM program, according to Gen. Andrew Gebara.
“Work needs to be done to ensure that Minuteman III sustainment is unbroken,” Gen. Gebara emphasized. He also mentioned that the upgraded Minuteman stages have been successfully test-fired. The Sentinel, a three-stage intercontinental ballistic missile, is set to replace the Minuteman III by 2038, with a potential cost increase to $140.9 billion, an 81% surge from the 2020 estimate.
