UNIFIL Mission in Lebanon: A Peacekeeping Operation at the Brink of War
Amid escalating border attacks between Lebanon and Israel, United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is on high alert. Established in 1978 after Israel invaded Lebanon, UNIFIL continues to monitor the cease-fire line meticulously drawn in 2000.
Recent intensified attacks by both sides have raised concerns about all-out war, as Hezbollah targets Israel to support Hamas in Gaza. UNIFIL conducts patrols along the border, reporting violations of the 2006 U.N. cease-fire agreement to the Security Council.
Although Lebanon and Israel have no diplomatic relations, UNIFIL acts as a mediator, maintaining relations with both parties to prevent escalation. While the mission faces increased danger, it aims to achieve lasting peace in the region.
With tens of thousands displaced by fighting, the fear of a wider conflict looms large. As both sides express reluctance for war, UNIFIL remains vigilant, ready to defend itself while working towards de-escalation and a peaceful resolution.
