Tragedy struck in Roundu valley of Skardu as a car carrying tourists plunged into the Indus River, resulting in three fatalities and three injuries. The accident occurred when falling rocks from a mountain hit the car on Baltistan Road, causing the driver to lose control.
The deceased were identified as Sajid Qureshi, a minor girl from Jhelum, and Syed Hassan, a local driver from Skardu. The injured, including a child, were rushed to Combined Military Hospital in critical condition.
The incident sparked protests by locals, highlighting concerns over road safety in the region. PPP leader Imran Nadeem Shigri emphasized the need for improved infrastructure to prevent such accidents.
In response, the GB government urged provincial leaders to launch a road safety awareness campaign for tourists visiting the area. The initiative aims to educate drivers on navigating hilly terrain safely.
Efforts to address structural flaws in road design and promote road safety are crucial to prevent future tragedies in Gilgit-Baltistan.
