Stakeholders willing to give new Limpopo health MEC Dieketseng Mashego a chance

Welcome to our blog!

The Quarterly Labour Force Survey revealed that the unemployment rate in Limpopo province spiked to 47.8% in the first quarter of 2024. This has significant implications for the region’s economy and social well-being.

Dieketseng Mashego, the new MEC for the Health Department, faces a challenging task ahead. With a budget increase of just over 3% from the previous year, amounting to R24.6bn, Mashego must navigate staff shortages, crumbling infrastructure, and the delivery of services to rural communities.

Additionally, the province grapples with food insecurity, as over half of Limpopo households face uncertainty about their next meal. Malnutrition poses serious health risks, especially for children.

Healthcare Challenges

Ritshidze project highlighted issues at clinic level, including long waiting times and inadequate HIV patient care. Partner organizations like the Treatment Action Campaign emphasize the need for Mashego to prioritize staffing, infrastructure, and service quality improvements.

Stakeholders, such as the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa, urge Mashego to address staff vacancies and support nurses working in rural areas where resources are scarce.

While questions remain unanswered by Mashego’s office, stakeholders are cautiously optimistic about her tenure, hoping she will prioritize the pressing healthcare challenges facing Limpopo.

Stay tuned for more updates on this critical issue!
