Hope for Peace in South Sudan: Key Protocols Signed in Nairobi Talks
The Tumaini (Hope) Initiative took a significant step forward on Monday as South Sudan’s government, the opposition, and other stakeholders initiated eight protocols in peace talks in Nairobi, Kenya. These discussions, hosted by Kenya since May 9th, aim to address issues left unresolved by the 2018 agreement that ended a five-year civil war.
The protocols cover various aspects of governance, security, and conflict resolution, with a focus on extending the transitional period, postponing elections, and establishing a national leadership council. This council will oversee key bodies responsible for implementing the Tumaini Framework, including the Joint Defense Board and the National Elections Commission.
Furthermore, the parties agreed to reform the National Constitutional Review Commission, enhance inclusivity in constitution-making processes, and revitalize the Strategic Defence and Security Review Board. A Regional High-Level Panel of Heads of State and Government will also monitor the agreement’s implementation.
This series of discussions, set against a backdrop of high expectations and renewed hope, signals a potential turning point towards lasting peace and stability in South Sudan.
