In a bold move, Pakistan’s government is set to outlaw former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party Tehreek-e-Insaf. The cabinet plans to bring new charges of treason against the politician, citing “credible evidence” of foreign funding received by the party. Khan, currently imprisoned on corruption charges, has faced numerous indictments that his party deems politically motivated.
Following Khan’s ousting in April 2022 and subsequent detention, nationwide riots erupted, leading to a political crisis only quelled by the Supreme Court’s order for his release. However, Khan was re-arrested on corruption charges. The government now seeks a ban on Tehreek-e-Insaf, claiming the allegations warrant such action, though final approval rests with the Supreme Court.
Amidst allegations and legal battles, Khan’s spokesman criticized the government’s actions as politically motivated and aimed at pressurizing the courts. The Human Rights Commission warns that banning the party could worsen polarization and escalate political turmoil. Additionally, Khan has accused the military and the US of orchestrating his downfall, while the government blames him for damaging relations with Washington.\
