CNN —
Pakistan has decided to extend the stay of nearly 1.5 million registered Afghan refugees, providing some stability for those with Proof of Registration (POR) cards until June 2025. However, the country will continue its mass deportation of “illegal immigrants,” according to officials.
The fate of 1.45 million refugees whose PORs expired had been uncertain, but the recent extension brings relief to many who feared being deported.
The decision to extend the POR cards came after a visit from the UN’s high commissioner for refugees, emphasizing the importance of providing longer-term solutions for Afghan refugees in Pakistan.
Pakistan, home to a significant refugee population, has faced challenges in integrating Afghan refugees over the years, with issues of documentation and deportation causing concern among families.
Amnesty International has called on Pakistan to suspend the deportation plan, stop all deportations, and establish a legal framework in line with international refugee law.
