The British army’s presence in Africa once again stirs controversy, as investigations reveal 24 allegations of soldiers paying for sex in Kenya despite a ban on using prostitutes imposed two years ago following the murder of Kenyan woman Agnes Wanjiru by a British soldier in 2012. The suspect remains at large, raising concerns over UK and Kenyan authorities.
The Ministry of Defence claimed that none of the recent incidents of “transactional sex” could be proven, disappointing Wanjiru’s niece, Esther Njoki, who questions the effectiveness of the new policies. The revelation sheds light on the poor track record of the armed forces in handling violence against women, with a low conviction rate for rape cases.
Despite the ban, witnesses claim that British soldiers continue to engage in sexual activities with local women in Kenya, highlighting a systemic abuse of power. The lack of accountability and enforcement of regulations call for urgent reevaluation by the government to address the ongoing exploitation and misconduct within the military.
