Kenyan police are under scrutiny as they search through a rubbish dump in a Nairobi slum where mutilated bodies were found in plastic sacks. The Independent Police Oversight Authority is investigating any police involvement in the gruesome discovery, as well as claims of abductions during anti-government protests.
Reports indicate more bags containing human remains have been found, with at least nine people’s remains recovered, seven of them female. The bodies showed signs of torture and mutilation, sparking shock and anger in the community.
National police chief Japhet Koome has resigned amidst public anger over the protest deaths, as President William Ruto faces a crisis over proposed tax hikes. Crowds at the dumpsite chanted “Ruto must go”, echoing the sentiments of recent protests.
Kenyan police are often accused of extrajudicial killings, further fueling the public’s fear and distrust. The situation remains tense as investigations continue.
