Govt encounters obstacles in BBMP restructuring plan

Bengaluru: The state government’s plan to restructure the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) by splitting it into multiple corporations faces hurdles similar to a failed attempt nine years ago. In 2015, a proposal to splinter the civic body was tabled by the Siddaramaiah government but failed due to a lack of majority in the Legislative Council and opposition from the central government.

The legislation proposing the BBMP’s trifurcation was passed in the Assembly but stalled in the Legislative Council. The current government faces a similar challenge with the BJP and JD(S) likely to reject the bill in the Council.

The proposed Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill 2024 aims to create an apex body bringing parastatals under one roof, expanding corporation limits by 250 square kilometres, and increasing wards to 400.
