Analysis: President Salva Kiir Determined to Proceed with Elections Despite Feasibility Concerns

Dr Ayine Nigo (PhD/FHEA) raises concerns about the feasibility of the scheduled elections on 22 December 2024 in South Sudan. President Salva Kiir is determined to proceed with the elections to secure re-election and extend his term. However, high-ranking officials are seeking extensions to prolong their current tenures due to uncertainties about winning in a legitimate election.

Despite efforts in the Tumaini talks to reach constructive outcomes, such as reforms or the establishment of a new government, there is opposition from senior SPLM leaders, opposition groups, and the South Sudan National Legislative Assembly. The absence of a constitution poses a risk of legal nullification of the election results.

Dr Nigo emphasizes the need for an inclusive approach to the Permanent Constitution-Making Process and the elections. He calls for transparency in negotiations and updates to the public on ongoing developments.

The Tumaini Consensus is expected to bring a new approach to the country, distinct from previous agreements. It remains to be seen how these discussions will shape the future of South Sudan.
