Barristers continue strike over wage dispute on day two

Several courthouses across the country are facing disruptions in criminal cases as barristers continue their second day of action over pay disputes. The campaign aims to reverse pay cuts imposed after the financial crisis, despite a 10% fee increase in the subsequent budget. The Council of The Bar of Ireland expressed frustration over the lack of engagement from the Government, emphasizing the need for leadership to ensure the orderly administration of justice.

Chair of the Council of The Bar of Ireland, Sara Phelan SC, called for action from the Government to prevent further disruptions that could affect victims of crime and accused persons. She invited the Government to personally meet with them to avert future possible disruptions.

Despite acknowledgments that reforms by criminal law practitioners justify fee restoration, there has been no meaningful engagement from the Government. The council regrets the impact on all involved in the criminal justice system and remains ready to meet with the Government to resolve the matter.

The third day of barristers taking action is scheduled for 24 July.
