Rwanda gains windfall and positive PR from migrant deal

By MOSES K. GAHIGI

Rwanda is set to benefit from Britain’s failed asylum deal, as the new Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, terminated the scheme on his first day in office. Despite already receiving two instalments, Rwanda will not refund the £270 million loan from Britain, as per a partnership termination clause. In response, Rwanda highlighted its commitment to providing safety and refuge to migrants and asylum seekers, emphasizing the funds were used to expand capacity for accommodation.

The termination of the deal signals a shift in UK policy, with only four asylum seekers sent to Rwanda voluntarily. The cancellation has raised questions on reimbursement, but Rwanda maintains that the agreement did not include such a clause. The deal, although unsuccessful, brought valuable international attention to Rwanda’s willingness to address global challenges.
