Russian forces detain Georgian near occupation line, report authorities

Russian forces have once again violated international law by illegally detaining a Georgian citizen near the village of Adzvi on July 13, near the border with South Ossetia. The State Security Service of Georgia reported the incident and informed the EU monitoring mission immediately.

The SUS condemned the actions of the Russian occupation forces, holding them responsible for all destructive activities in the occupied territories and along the occupation line. This arrest is just one in a series of similar incidents that have occurred near the border.

In a related incident, a Georgian national was tragically killed by Russian forces near South Ossetia in November 2023, marking the first fatality since the 2008 invasion. The situation has escalated to the point where the EU has frozen defense funds for Georgia and halted their accession process, signaling a strained relationship between the two parties.

Brussels has frozen 30 million euros ($32 million) in defense sector funding for Georgia after halting its EU accession process in June, EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Herczynski said on July 9.
