In a controversial move, Palestinian PM Mahmoud Abbas blamed Hamas for Israel’s ongoing war on the Gaza Strip, sparking condemnation from various Palestinian groups.
Abbas accused Hamas of sharing legal, moral, and political responsibility for the massacres in Gaza, along with the US administration and the Israeli government. He called for Hamas to prioritize national interests and stop providing pretexts for Israel to continue its war.
Hamas, in response, denounced Abbas’ statement, calling it a betrayal and urging the presidency to withdraw the remarks. Other Palestinian groups, including Fatah and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, also criticized Abbas for his stance.
While Abbas has been in power for almost two decades, activists and diaspora Palestinians have been critical of his leadership, accusing him of not effectively addressing Israel’s occupation.
Israel’s war on Gaza has resulted in thousands of Palestinian casualties and deepened the humanitarian crisis in the region. The ongoing conflict has led to widespread destruction and loss of life.
