India on Track to Remain the Most Populous Country in the World
India is projected to maintain its status as the most populous country globally, with its population set to peak at 1.7 billion in the 2060s before beginning to decline, as per a new United Nations report. Currently, India has a population of around 1.4 billion, surpassing China last year.
While India’s population is expected to decrease by about 12% by 2100 after reaching its peak, the nation will still lead as the most populous country. China, on the other hand, is experiencing a decline in population due to reduced fertility rates.
By 2100, India and China will be succeeded in population rankings by Pakistan, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the US. The growth in the US population will mainly be driven by migration.
India’s youth demographic is predicted to be a significant contributor to global wealth creation in the coming years, with 30% expected to come from India. Additionally, India’s increasing adoption of modern contraceptives to control birth rates and the demographic shift towards a larger working-age population indicate positive trends for the country’s future.
