Dubai Crown Prince appointed as UAE Defence Minister

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum of Dubai recently appointed his son, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, as the Minister of Defence in a cabinet reshuffle in the UAE. Sheikh Hamdan, who is also the crown prince of Dubai, will now serve as the Deputy Prime Minister as well.

At 41, Sheikh Hamdan is a graduate of Britain’s prestigious Sandhurst military college and has been involved in strategic development plans as the chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai since 2006. Meanwhile, Sheikh Mohammed, who has been the defence minister since the founding of the UAE in 1971, made this decision to strengthen the government and modernize the cabinet.

In addition to Sheikh Hamdan’s appointment, the foreign minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was also named as a deputy prime minister in the reshuffle. The UAE, a significant player in the Middle East with strong alliances globally, is making strategic changes to drive further growth and development in the country.
