CUHK initiates Guangdong academic centers to enhance medical research.

Hong Kong faces limitations in medical innovation compared to neighbouring regions like Southeast Asia and mainland China, prompting an increase in Hong Kong patients seeking healthcare services across the border. Dr. Wu, in a recent interview, emphasized the need to enhance collaboration between Hong Kong and the mainland to foster medical research and innovation.

To address these challenges, CUHK plans to establish academic and medical research centres in Shenzhen and Guangzhou. These centres aim to leverage leading technologies and treatments from the mainland to benefit Hong Kong residents. They also plan to focus on gerontechnology, rehabilitation, and other diseases like cancer and diabetes.

CUHK is optimistic about the potential for cross-border collaboration in medical research and development, such as the successful use of a surgical robotic system developed by Hong Kong and mainland researchers. The university’s efforts highlight the importance of international cooperation in advancing healthcare services and innovations.
