Communist party leader becomes new prime minister

Nepal’s largest communist party leader, Khadga Prasad Oli, became the new prime minister after the collapse of the previous coalition government. Oli, a veteran politician, will lead a new coalition government comprising the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) and the Nepali Congress party.

The former government fell apart as Oli’s party withdrew its support, necessitating a new partnership. Oli must secure a vote of confidence in parliament within a month to remain in power.

Balancing relationships with neighboring India and China will be Oli’s main challenge, given both countries’ interest in Nepal. Oli, a 72-year-old who has a history of opposition to Nepal’s monarchy, has also faced health struggles with kidney issues.
