Greek naval officers have gained valuable insights from their participation in the European operation Aspides in the Red Sea, specifically in dealing with unmanned aerial threats. The Greek vessels successfully downed three Houthi UAVs, one of which was brought down by the Centaur anti-drone system developed by the Hellenic Aerospace Industry and deployed on the Psara frigate.
The operation highlighted the effectiveness of anti-drone systems in early threat detection and communication interruption between the UAV and its operator. The Centaur system, with increased power and range, proved more efficient compared to the use of Aster missiles by allied ships.
The lessons learned will be incorporated into plans to enhance Greece’s air defense capabilities against tactical ballistic missiles and various drone threats. The installation of early warning and jamming stations on Aegean islands marks a significant step towards strengthening defense infrastructure.
Greece’s focus on integrating the air defense network with advanced technologies like Israeli anti-drone systems reflects the country’s commitment to enhancing national security against evolving threats in the region.
