Tanzania’s Ministry of Tourism and Natural Resources has mandated that all fees and charges in the tourism sector must be paid in the local currency, aligning with the government’s directive for local transactions to be conducted in Tanzanian shillings. This includes Tourism Business Licence fees, filming permits, and visiting fees, which were previously paid in dollars but will now be converted at the Bank of Tanzania exchange rate.
Finance Minister Mwigulu Nchemba’s ban on the use of dollars in local transactions, announced in the 2024/2025 Annual Budget speech, aims to stabilize the Tanzanian shilling. Tourists and non-residents are encouraged to exchange foreign currency for shillings to support Tanzania’s economy, as the country shifts towards a more localized payment system in the tourism industry.
This move by the Tanzanian government reflects a broader effort to promote economic stability and boost the local currency’s value, impacting the country’s tourism sector significantly.
