Pachyderm ‘Roopavathi’ finally arrives in Hyderabad

Davangere: The 36-year-old female elephant, Roopavathi, from Shri Shaila Mutt in Davangere, faced a journey to Hyderabad for the Muharram and Bonalu processions on July 17. Initially blocked due to animal activists’ complaints, approval was later granted after discussions between Telangana Minister Konda Surekha and the Karnataka government, based on a medical certificate confirming the elephant’s fitness.

Veterinary officers in Davangere deemed Roopavathi healthy for the procession, allowing her transport to Hyderabad. Despite initial objections during the journey, the state government eventually permitted her passage. The forest department’s officers are monitoring her journey, aiming for arrival in Hyderabad on Sunday or Monday.

With a shortage of middle-aged elephants in Hyderabad, Karnataka’s assistance was sought for this traditional procession carrying Bibi ka Alam. This cultural ritual has long involved an elephant bearer in Hyderabad, emphasizing the significance of Roopavathi’s journey.
