Last week, a devastating wildfire ravaged the Nemea wine region in Greece, leaving grape-growers and winemakers facing the aftermath. Maria Panagiotopoulou from Semeli winery reported significant vine damage, while Dimitris Skouras and Yiannis Paraskevopoulos also suffered losses. The president of the Nemea Winemakers’ Association described the fire as the final blow to the region’s already struggling wine industry due to climate change impact.

The destruction extended beyond vineyards to the raisin and sultana crops as well as olive oil production. Nemea Mayor Konstantinos Frousios has appealed for government assistance amidst the ongoing challenges. Winemakers like Evangelia Palivou voiced concerns over the worsening impact of climate change, emphasizing the urgent need for support and solutions in the region.
