NATO is looking to enhance its joint exercises with Japan across various domains, including maritime and cyberspace, to address the interconnected security challenges facing Europe and Asia. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized the increasing importance of the partnership with Japan, particularly in light of global events such as the Ukraine crisis.
During a recent summit in Washington, Stoltenberg highlighted the deepening cooperation between Japan and NATO, with plans to conduct joint drills and share confidential information. The alliance aims to expand collaboration with Japan in areas like sea and air exercises, reflecting a broader shift towards engagement in the Indo-Pacific region.
Stoltenberg also commended Japan’s technological prowess and expressed interest in advancing defense industrial collaboration. With concerns about North Korea’s involvement in supporting Russia militarily, NATO remains vigilant and focused on addressing disinformation challenges posed by China and Russia.
While discussions about opening a NATO liaison office in Tokyo are ongoing, Stoltenberg believes it could be a positive step for future Indo-Pacific engagement. Overall, the alliance seeks to strengthen ties with Japan and other regional partners to address evolving security threats.
