Ersin Tatar, the leader of the breakaway Turkish Cypriot state in north Cyprus, expressed hopes of ending international isolation in an interview with AFP as Cyprus marked fifty years of division. Tatar emphasized the challenges faced by Turkish Cypriots due to embargoes and isolation, seeking recognition for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus since its declaration in 1983.
The division of Cyprus occurred in 1974 after Turkey’s invasion in response to a coup aiming to annex the island to Greece, resulting in ethnic lines drawn across the island. Despite efforts for reunification, talks have stalled, with Tatar advocating for a two-state solution as the way forward.
Tatar highlighted the development of a modern state in northern Cyprus, citing the peace maintained by Turkish troops on the island. With UN peacekeepers urging talks to resume, Tatar stresses the importance of a fair settlement for both communities.
As Turkish Cypriots seek recognition and economic growth, Tatar’s vision for an equal and sovereign future for both sides remains steadfast amidst the challenges of a divided island.
