Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi had their sentences overturned by the Islamabad Additional District and Sessions Court. The couple had been sentenced to seven years for allegedly marrying too soon after her divorce, in violation of Islamic law. A spokesman for Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party confirmed that the charges had been dismissed.
Despite the court’s decision, Khan remains in custody after his bail was revoked over accusations of inciting riots by his supporters in May 2023. A UN panel of experts also found that Khan’s detention was politically motivated and lacking legal basis, calling for his immediate release.
Khan, who previously served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, faced opposition from military-backed rival parties. His efforts to defy the military establishment were hindered by legal cases, leading to his arrest and imprisonment. PTI candidates won the most seats in the national election but were prevented from forming the government.
