Police were called to a residence on Young Street at Box Hill about 7.45pm yesterday following reports of an assault.
Officers located the body of a man in a stairwell.
A second man is assisting with inquiries, police said.
The victim is yet to be formally identified but police believe both parties are known to each other.
Detectives remain at the scene this morning and will be scouring surrounding CCTV.
