In a landmark decision, a court in Ecuador has sentenced five individuals involved in the murder of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. The journalist and former legislator was tragically shot while leaving a rally, sparking outrage and bringing attention to Ecuador’s escalating violence.
The court’s ruling, which saw sentences ranging from 12 to 34 years, can be challenged by both the prosecution and defence. The accused were linked to criminal gangs, including Los Lobos, designated as terrorists by President Daniel Noboa. The trial, which began in June, shed light on the dangerous underworld of organized crime in Ecuador.
Mr Villavicencio, known for his investigative journalism exposing corruption, had long been a target for threats. Prosecutors are now delving into uncovering who orchestrated the murder, following the deaths of several suspects in custody.
The victim’s loved ones have expressed frustration over delays in the trial and are calling for justice to be served. Veronica Sarauz, Villavicencio’s widow, has pleaded for the perpetrators to face the full extent of the law.
