Finland recently passed a law granting border guards the power to block asylum seekers coming from Russia, following the arrival of over 1,300 individuals. The decision comes amidst accusations of Russia ‘weaponizing migration’ by encouraging migrants from countries like Syria and Somalia to cross the border, which Finland claims is retaliation for joining NATO to support Ukraine against Russia’s aggression.
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo emphasized the importance of the bill in ensuring national security, despite conflicting with human rights commitments. Finland closed its land borders with Russia late last year, with only one person crossing illegally after the new law’s implementation. The Finnish Border Guard reported no new arrivals since March until the recent incident.
